Through life you’re going to face ups and downs, peaks and troughs. What determines your long-term happiness, fulfillment and success is how you respond and get through those rough times.
A great Tony Robbins quote is: “Decisions equal destiny.” He emphasizes that biography isn’t the deciding factor in how we live our lives, our decisions and actions shape our lives!
If being grateful and happy for everything you’ve gone through is the guiding principle for all your actions, you’ll find yourself doing amazing things with yourself!
Chances are, if you’re reading this, you’re already in a good spot, it might just be hard to remember. You have people around you that care for you, you live in a country where you have access to clean water, you have freedom of speech and expression and you don’t live in poverty. You’re well nourished and every morning you get up, the world is your oyster if you want it to be!
So if you’re hitting a rough time, what can you do? Keep on striving to make the world a better place! Keep your chin up and always remember that no matter how bad things get, there is goodness and awesomeness around you, there for the taking if you ask the world for it.
You live life on your own terms, so strive to achieve something that’s bold and bigger than you and something that’s super meaningful.
So how can being grateful improve our lives?
Gratitude makes us happier
Shawn Achor, a positive psychologist at Harvard University says you should start a gratitude journal! If you spend several minutes a day writing down what you are grateful for, you train your brain to start scanning for positives and things to be happy about in a situation! Just like any muscle, your brain can be trained to be happy and fulfilled! After the 21 days of gratitude, he noticed an increase in happiness levels over the next six months, simply from writing about what you’re happy about!
“Happiness is found in the absence of expectation and a continuous focus on appreciation.” – Tony Robbins.
Tony Robbins is big on focus leading to outcomes. If we focus on the things that we can’t control or let go of, we feel powerless. But if we focus on the things that have empowered us and the things that we are grateful for, we will allow ourselves to live with more clarity, purpose and meaning!
Gratitude makes us more productive
What Shawn Achor also found is that businesses that taught the techniques of gratitude and positivity experienced greater employee satisfaction and became more productive and successful businesses! Sales increased, as did employee satisfaction and metrics on life satisfaction, effectiveness at work, levels of stress (decreased) and optimism at work!
So be grateful
You might be in a peak or a trough in your life – but if you take the time daily to focus on all of the positive experiences, opportunities and people that surround you, you will come out a happier, a more fulfilled, a more productive and a more focused person. As you become more and more resilient each time to the challenges life deals you, your gratitude will help you gain happiness, clarity and purpose in your life!
